About The Event

Dr. Fernandes joined Cardiff Metropolitan University in November 2021 as a lecturer and researcher in Exercise Physiology. Prior to this he lectured Hartpury University, and at the University of Chester whilst completing his PhD (acute strength and power responses to resistance exercise in trained middle-aged males). John’s research has focused on fatigue, muscle damage and recovery from exercise, as well as velocity-based training. During the course of his education he gained experience as strength and conditioning coach and sports scientist in a number of settings (e.g. Warrington Wolves RLFC, Welsh RU, GB rowing, Chester Hockey Club).

Dr. Fernandes is also lead superviser for two PhD students. One is looking at the effects of menstrual cycle phase on recovery from muscle damaging upper and lower body resistance exercise in well trained athletes (Hannah Clarke), and the other is looking at the effects of menstrual cycle phase on fatigue induced by a simulated football match (Andrew Hearn).

Webinar Outline:

  • What is muscle damage, and how is it caused?
  • How do we know practically if the muscle is damaged?
  • How does it change with age, sex or menstrual cycle phase affect damage?
  • What do we do when our muscles are damaged?
  • How do we support recovery?

Time for questions and discussions will be allocated for the end of the presentation.
